Viewers have started getting niche again, but Netflix continues to churn out monster hits it seems like “everyone” is watching, like Bridgerton and Squid Game. It was a pandemic, we were bored and looking for escapism, and there were so many tigers! Suddenly we were all back on the same page. We were all watching all the time-but not all the same thing. But as more and more series hit the platform, audiences grew splintered. Netflix pioneered the “binge,” dropping full seasons of cliff-hanger-y dramas like Orange Is the New Black and reinventing how we consumed content.

On January 26, that was not an option for VFR flights because of a deep marine layer which had pushed fog from the Pacific Ocean into the Santa Monica Mountains. On most of its previous flights to Camarillo, the helicopter had turned west at Downtown Los Angeles and flown over the Santa Monica Mountains until it picked up the Ventura Freeway (US 101). Flight Ĩ Camarillo Airport (CMA), intended destination Audio of the radio transmissions between the helicopter and controllers until contact was lost A security image captured the helicopter just before the crash flying in the clouds.īecause visual flight rules prohibit a pilot from flying into or near clouds, the helicopter remained at an altitude of 700 or 800 feet (210 or 240 m) above mean sea level (AMSL) while flying northwest from SNA. Closer to the site of the crash, the cloud top extended up to 2,400 feet (730 m) above mean sea level. Īccording to an automated weather station, the ceiling (distance from ground to bottom of the cloud layer) at the Van Nuys Airport was 1,100 feet (340 m) above ground level. Bryant's celebrity status would not have given the helicopter priority in that airspace. Even if the company's operating certificate and its own internal policies had allowed for flying under IFR, that option could still have led to lengthy delays and detours (thereby using up any anticipated time savings) because of severe congestion in Los Angeles controlled airspace. Flying through clouds is possible if a pilot elects to operate under instrument flight rules (IFR), but the company's Part 135 operating certificate, issued in 1998, limited operations to on-demand VFR-only flights. as a 14 CFR 135 (Part 135) on-demand passenger flight under visual flight rules (VFR). It was operated by Island Express Helicopters Inc. At the time that N72EX took off from SNA, visibility was 5 miles (8.0 km) with a ceiling of 1,300 feet (400 m). The Los Angeles Police Air Support Division had grounded its police helicopters on the morning of January 26 due to poor visibility and low ceiling Air Support Division rules require at least 2 miles (3.2 km) of visibility and an 800-foot (240 m) cloud ceiling. : 1–2 The report concluded that, at the moment of the accident, the estimated visibility ranges were between 1–1.5 miles (1.6–2.4 km). The FAA conducted a visibility study which used frequency analysis to determine when the aircraft made the closest approach to each camera, ground-speed, engine RPM, and likely inflight visibility by comparing video recorded during the accident period to clear-sky imagery. In particular, surveillance cameras installed at the Agoura Pony Baseball Fields provided overlapping coverage of the final parts of the flight path. Weather conditions Ī number of video recordings of the crash area were available, and although none showed the crash itself, the sound of the helicopter and the crash was recorded. The previous day's flight had taken only 30 minutes in contrast, driving from Kobe's home in Newport Beach to the academy would have taken at least 2 hours. Flight history records showed that the helicopter had flown the same journey the day before without incident to Camarillo Airport (CMA), a major general aviation airport about 20 minutes by car from Mamba Sports Academy. They were heading to a basketball game at Kobe's Mamba Sports Academy in Newbury Park, where Kobe was scheduled to coach Gianna's team. PST (17:06 UTC), 9 passengers and crew departed from John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California, in a 1991 Sikorsky S-76B helicopter, registration N72EX. On January 26, 2020, at approximately 9:06 a.m. The accident was investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) which concluded that it was caused by continued VFR into IMC: the helicopter entered low cloud cover, which caused the pilot to lose his sense of orientation, and thence lose control. All nine people on board were killed: retired professional basketball player Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri, his daughter Alyssa, Payton Chester, her mother Sarah, basketball coach Christina Mauser, and the pilot, Ara Zobayan. It may be the case that you prefer more neutral tones such as Black or White on the iPhone 12, or Graphite or Silver on the iPhone 12 Pro, and then use a more colorful case. If you use your iPhone with a case, you may wish to consider which color will best complement your case. Pacific Blue replaces 2019's Midnight Green on the iPhone 11 Pro, and there is no longer a green Pro model available. Moreover, the new Graphite color, in reality, appears to be very similar to Space Gray from previous generations. The Silver iPhone 12's rear is in fact white. It is worth noting that the iPhone 12 Pro's Silver color only refers to the edges of the device. In contrast to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, Apple selected a more subdued and mature color palette for the iPhone 12 Pro models. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are available in four colors. In April 2021, Apple added a brand new Purple iPhone 12 color option to the lineup, matching the new Purple iMac. White, on the other hand, is largely analogous to the iPhone 12 Pro's Silver, except with less prominent matte aluminum edges. The Black iPhone 12 should not be confused with Space Gray or Apple's new Graphite color. Apple selected a bolder, brighter color palette for the iPhone 12 lineup. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are available in six colors. The 12 and 12 Pro have different color choices, so if you have your heart set on a particular shade, you might not be able to get your preferred model in that color. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini in the new purple color will ship with iOS 14.5, according to Apple.Īpple is also releasing a new MagSafe Leather Case and Leather Sleeve in Deep Violet, a Silicone Case in Capri Blue, Pistachio, Cantaloupe, or Amethyst, and a Leather Wallet in Arizona, which are all available to order now.The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro arrived in October 2020 in a range of color options, with entirely new hues available on both devices, as well as some popular classics. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will be available in the new purple color starting April 30, with pre-orders starting this Friday. Pricing starts at $699 for the iPhone 12 mini and $799 for the iPhone 12 in the United States. Mashable's Brenda Stoylar said that the new color is "very pretty," and similarly noted that it is "more of a periwinkle or a lavender" than purple.Ĭhris Velazco of Engadget also noticed the more subdued nature of the purple, but interestingly observed that it is "roughly the same pastel shade that last year's purple iPhone 11 came in."Īpple continues to sell the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini in existing colors, including Black, White, Blue, Green, and (PRODUCT)RED. I am also glad it doesn't have a fancy name. It's unmistakable even at a distance, whereas the light green iPhone 12 models could be mistaken for off-white in certain light. There are many shades of purple, but this one is what Apple went with and I like it. It lacks the redness you'd expect in a mauve or the blue tones you'd see in a violet. One might be tempted to call it lavender, but to me it's a bit more like a lilac or maybe a wisteria. Image via The Verge The Verge's Dieter Bohn described the new color as "more like a lilac," but still said that it was unmistakable: If your order is selected for a manual review and you don't want to wait or provide additional information, you can always request order cancellation and get your money back. So he donated them to a museum, but unfortunately the museum didn’t take care of them and they were destroyed and thrown away. Méliès loved these automata, but he lost his money and couldn’t take care of them any more. The mechanical figures had been built years earlier by a magician and clockmaker named Jean-Robert Houdin (the magician who Harry Houdini named himself after). Gaby Wood had an entire chapter about Georges Méliès in her book because Méliès owned a collection of automata. Automata are mechanical figures which are made out of very complicated clockworks and can do amazing things like sing or dance or swing on a trapeze or write poems or even (supposedly) play chess. This book is about the history of automata (it’s pronounced aw-TOM-ah-tah). I went to Philadelphia to visit the machine, and I found out that it had a pretty amazing history that was very similar to the story I had made up for the automaton in The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Hugos job is to maintain the clocks as well as unfolding the secret message from his father through the automaton. It was originally build by Georges Mlis and later repaired by Hugo. This is not one of the machines that Georges Melies owned (see below), but it was very much LIKE the ones he had. The same is true of a light bulb, a mobile phone tower, a Wi-Fi connection, etc. You have no doubt noticed that as you move away from a source of sound, particularly outdoors, it gets quieter. We are going to look at the source-path-receiver relationship in three parts: outdoor acoustics, or what we call a free field environment, where the only thing that affects the path is distance indoor acoustics, where we’ll put the source and receiver in the same room together and try to understand the effect that the room has on and isolated acoustics where we’ll put the source and receiver in separate rooms and look at how the intervening walls and other construction elements affect how much sound gets into a room or gets out of a room. If we want to change the quality or quantity of sound at the receiver, we have to make a change to one or more of these three elements: the source, path, or the receiver itself. Sound is generated by a source, follows some path from source to receiver, and is experienced by the receiver (usually a human listener). Assessing or manipulating any sound can be simplified into what is often called a source-path-receiver analysis. Practitioners of acoustics, or acousticians, want to understand how sound impacts a listener, we look at the path that the sound has taken on its way to the listener from the source. Our experience of sound is always acoustic, regardless of whether electronics were involved in the path from the source to our ears. However, we are not able to hear audio signals until they have been turned back into acoustic signals. Audio is a convenient way to transmit, manipulate, and store sound. In the recording industry, the term “audio” generally refers to an electrical representation of an acoustic signal. Acoustics is the study of sound in some mechanical form-whether in air or some other medium. It is important that we draw a distinction between acoustics and audio. What is the difference between acoustics and audio? Musicians are primarily concerned with the range of sound that is audible to humans, and that will be the focus of this article. What is acoustics?Īcoustics is the branch of physics concerned with the study of sound, which is simply anything that humans or other animals can hear. Here are some basic ideas in acoustics to begin your studies, which can be beneficial before diving into the more advanced mathematical concepts. If you’re looking to become a better sound or recording engineer, acoustics is definitely something you want to wrap your head around. The following is excerpted from Berklee Online’s Acoustics course, authored by Eric Reuter.įrom outdoor amphitheaters, to indoor concert halls, to sound-tight recording studios, an understanding of acoustics is required to design these spaces and ensure they sound their best when they are filled with live music. Our goal is to help schools of all shapes and sizes save time, stay compliant with regulatory requirements, and proactively reduce risk, so you can be confident you’re providing a safe environment for staff and pupils and protected against worst-case scenarios. WorkNest has provided specialist Health & Safety support to the education sector for over a decade and has extensive experience working with Multi-Academy Trusts. To make your life easier, WorkNest has developed a number of documents to help governors and trustees check what the school has in place and what is needed, including checklists detailing required risk assessments and training, both of which can be downloaded below. Remember, you don’t need to be a health and safety professional to ask challenging questions. You are not required to scrutinise every detail, but you will want to see that certain reports have been actioned, for example asbestos surveys and fire and legionella risk assessments. For this purpose, you might want to appoint a health and safety nominator governor who should have undertaken updated health and safety awareness training. I will typically visit the school three times per year solely to check in on health and safety, ask specific questions and see specific documentation.Īs a governor or trustee, you are looking for assurance that governance is being properly managed. Indeed, individuals can also be personally prosecuted under Section 36 and 37 the HSWA if there is deemed to be negligence on their behalf – making it even more important to get health and safety right.Īs a school governor myself, I split this document into meaningful and practical visits. Your school’s reputation and finances and.And if a Board is prosecuted, those on the Board could be individually named.Īs such, think of health and safety as ‘safeguarding’. Therefore, if someone is going to be prosecuted, it would likely be the Board as the employer, whether that’s governors or trustees. Ultimately, when it comes to identifying defendants in health and safety cases, the HSE will look at who’s in control of premises and what degree of control they have over what’s being done. This can be the Local Authority, the Governing Body or proprietor, or the Academy Trust. Should an incident occur, overall legal accountability for health and safety will rest with the employer – who the employer is will vary according to the type of school. Regardless of the structure of your school environment, health and safety should be owned right throughout the organisation and it’s important that it features on any meeting where governors or trustees are involved. Within Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs), there is a Trust Board, and you may also have Full Governing Bodies (FGBs) in place at a local level who then delegate responsibilities to various subcommittees such as Finance and Premises, commonly known as the resources committee. However, the ultimate accountability and liability remains with the Board. So, who has accountability and responsibility for health and safety within schools? And who’s likely to be held liable should an incident occur?Īs a governor or trustee, you can delegate the day-to-day responsibility for managing health and safety to the Headteacher, School Business Manager or Site Manager. With all of this in mind, this article aims to explain, from one governor to another, what can go wrong, what your liabilities are, and how you can become more effective as a governor or trustee in respect to health and safety governance. This can mean that things may be missed, and there’s less opportunity to build relationships with individuals (though, arguably, this degree of separation can sometimes make it easier to ask more challenging questions that peers might not).Īll of these factors make managing health and safety more difficult – nonetheless, it’s an area you can’t afford to ignore. You’re also dealing with a number of competing demands and working with financial constraints.Īdditionally, as unpaid volunteers, we’re not there day in day out. Schools in particular require good governance, and health and safety is a vitally important aspect of this.Īs a school governor myself, I understand that for those who take on this role, time is limited.
